Healthcare in Sweden is high-quality and accessible. Knowing where to turn when you need care can make settling in much easier.

Here’s a quick guide to help you find the right care when you need it.

Emergency service

In an emergency, dial 112 for immediate help or go straight to the hospital's emergency department. You can call the number 24/7.

Healthcare centres (Vårdcentral)

This is your first stop for non-urgent medical issues. Here you will meet doctors, nurses, midwives, psychologists and more. Services include everything from regular check-ups to prenatal and child healthcare.

• Open weekdays, usually 8 AM–5 PM.
• Register at your local vårdcentral once you have a Swedish personal identity number.

How to register:

1. Choose a healthcare centre.
   You are free to choose any vårdcentral in Västerås, whether it is public or private.
2. Register online
   The easiest way is to register through the national healthcare website 1177.se.
3. Register in person or by form
   You can also visit the healthcare centre in person and ask for a registration form or contact them to receive one by mail.

Once registered, the healthcare centre will be responsible for your primary healthcare, including doctor’s appointments, referrals and preventive care..

Out-of-hours clinics

If you need help or guidance, you can contact 1177, available by phone or online. Feeling unwell during evenings or wekeends? Go to a jourcentral (no appointment needed, through calling ahead is smart).

Pharmacies (Apotek)

You will find both prescription and over-the-counter medicine at the pharmacy. Pharmacists are also great for quick advice on minor health issues.
