In Sweden, preschool goes by many names: förskola, föris, dagis.. you name it!

Preschool is optional, but most children do attend. It is designed so your child can go to preschool while you work or study, giving them a safe, fun, and inspiring place to learn, play, and develop, while making everyday life easier for parents.

Applying for Preschool in Västerås

If you and your child have a Swedish personal identity number, you can apply easily through our e-service.

If you do not have a Swedish personal identity number, you can pick up an application form at the entrance of Stadshuset, 721 87 Västerås, or email kontaktcenter@vasteras.se. Do not forget to fill in the supplementary cover sheet with contact information for your child’s guardians. Just so you know, this link leads to a Swedish page.

It also emphasizes values like equality, democracy, and respect for others, while supporting each child’s language, motor, and cognitive development.

Costs of Preschool

The fee for preschool depends on your family income, with a maximum fee. The public preschool option (15 hours/week) for children aged 3–5 is free.
